How does it work?

Several things in your body will change after surgery. You can experience different symptoms because (a part of) the stomach, oesophagus or pancreas is removed. Examples are food intolerance, abdominal pains, nausea, reflux (heartburns), diarrhoea, dumping (feeling unwell after having food or drinks), a change in taste or a reduced appetite.

A decreased vitamin and mineral absorption

Your body may also have a reduced ability to absorb nutrients after surgery. The result: a potential vitamins and minerals deficiency. Research* shows that 78% of the individuals has at least one deficiency after surgery and 40% at least two. These often are a vitamin D and B12, iron and folic acid deficiency. But vitamin A, E, K and zinc deficiencies also occur very often.**

The importance of vitamins and minerals

Vitamins and minerals make sure the body functions well. These are essential nutrients that the body cannot create itself, and therefore have to be taken up by consuming foods. If your body cannot absorb these nutrients well (as a result of your surgery), it is important to supplement your food with extra vitamins and minerals.
